The number of vessels connected to dining and drinking would have been part of the rituals of socialisation of the elites, while the coins tell us much about the messages that leaders wanted to convey to the people. The artefacts we propose today to your attention provide us a gateway across the centuries, and allow us to have a brief glimpse into the daily lives and the political machinations of the ancient world. For metal vessels, as in some ceramic, these were made separately.The Greek and Roman world have fascinated men and women across the world and across the centuries, and has come to embody for some of us values and concepts we hold particularly dear: philosophy, democracy, beauty, and eros. The elaborately profiled foot is intended to be understood as including a stand. The reverse depicts three revelers: the users, as it were, of this krater. Around the bull dance the denizens of the deep.

Europa, apparently unperturbed and finely dressed, adjusts her veil in a bridal gesture. It is the sea voyage between Tyre and Crete that the artist illustrates. There she bore to Zeus a number of sons, most famously Minos, king of Crete. He disguised himself in the form of a bull (or, as some versions relate, sent a bull), who attracted her attention and managed to carry her off across the sea to Crete. Europa, daughter of Agenor, king of Tyre, was picking flowers in a meadow one spring morning when she was noticed by Zeus.
